Kaizer Chiefs Mourn the Passing of Legendary Defender Simon “Bull” Lehoko

Kaizer Chiefs and the wider South African football fraternity are grieving the passing of Simon “Bull” Lehoko, a legendary icon in the country’s soccer legacy. Lehoko died on April 17, 2025, at the age of 74.

Simon Lehoko, born in Vereeniging in 1951, kicked off his football career with Real X20, a club based in Sharpeville and coached by his father. Known for his powerful presence and resilience on the field, he earned the nickname “Bull.” He represented Vaal Professionals between 1971 and 1978 before moving to Kaizer Chiefs, where he featured in 238 matches and netted 25 goals before hanging up his boots in 1985.

Lehoko played a key role in Kaizer Chiefs’ remarkable achievement of winning four major trophies in 1981. He also had the honor of representing South Africa in an international match against Rhodesia in 1977.

Following his retirement, Lehoko focused on developing young players, guiding Vaal Professionals to a Bob Save Super Bowl triumph in 1994. Alongside his son, Mojekisane, he founded the Simon Bull Lehoko Foundation to promote community growth through sports initiatives.

In 2016, Lehoko encountered serious health issues, which led to the amputation of his leg as a result of diabetes complications. Reflecting the lasting bond within the football fraternity, Kaizer Chiefs legends and club officials paid him a visit in Sharpeville in 2021, gifting him a new wheelchair and showing their continued support and solidarity.

Lehoko’s passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from fans, ex-teammates, and the broader football community. His impact on South African soccer, both as a player and a mentor has left a lasting legacy. As the country remembers his remarkable life, preparations are being made to pay tribute and celebrate the legacy of this true football icon.

Rest in peace, Simon “Bull” Lehoko. Your passion and unwavering commitment to the beautiful game will forever serve as an inspiration to future generations.
